GOVERNMENT MANAGERS URGED TO BE MORE EFFECTIVE

Mpumalanga Premier Thabang Makwetla says poor performance in the Public Service impedes service delivery.

The Premier was addressing senior Mpumalanga civil servants at the Supply Chain Management workshop held today at Emnothweni Arena, Nelspruit.
Heads of Mpumalanga Government Departments, Chief Financial Officers, and Procurement Officers attended the workshop.

The workshop follows complaints from service providers with regard to late payments. According to the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) regulations, service providers must be paid within 30 days of delivery of services.

Mr. Makwetla also elaborated that managers must ensure that payments to service providers are made in time in order to avoid penalty costs and also help sustain the growth of Small, Micro and Medium Enterprises (SMME’s).

Officials were warned that failure to comply with the stipulations of the PFMA, particularly late payments without a valid reason will result in immediate suspension and a formal institution of a disciplinary enquiry.

Makwetla says Mpumalanga can be a centre of excellence only if the issue of corruption is properly tackled.

“Poor work ethic and low levels of integrity in the Government Departments delay the execution of government programs and in order to attract economic investments, we will have to deal with both the perceptions and the reality of corruption”, said Mr. Makwetla.

Makwetla said his province would urgently implement some of the resolutions of the Anti-corruption summit that was recently held in Tshwane.
