2011 could be a record breaking Forever Resorts Loskop Marathon
The Forever Resorts Loskop Marathon should be a highly contested
race this year as the top athletes in the Men and Ladies categories
battle it out for the R100 000 record incentive that the organisers
are offering at the 26th Forever Resorts Loskop Marathon.
The Series will take place on Saturday, 16 April 2011. The 50km
Ultra Marathon will constitute the last opportunity for runners who
entered the 2011 Comrades Marathon to qualify or better their
seedings.
Equally exciting this year is the fact that the prize-money has
increased to a potential pool of
R340 000, which is equally distributed across the
Men’s and Ladies categories.
This brings the total amount of potential prizemoney to R540
000 for the Ultra Marathon only.
Another wonderful addition to this year’s event is the announcement
that the Department of Culture Sport and Recreation of Mpumalanga
Province has partnered with Forever Resorts to present Mpumalanga’s
Premier Road Running event this year.
“We are delighted to be part of this auspicious occasion.
The Department has supported the event in a number of ways
over the years but seized the opportunity in 2011 to really embark
on a concerted effort to promote and grow the sport of road running
in our Province. We are
pleased to partner with Forever Resorts, a major tourism roleplayer
in Mpumalanga, and look forward to being part of the action this
year,” said Ms Sibongile Nkosi, spokesperson for the Department.
2011 will mark the fifth Forever Resorts Wild Challenge – a half
marathon, which makes up the second component of the Forever Resorts
Loskop Marathon Series.
To commemorate the fifth Forever Resorts Wild Challenge, the
entrants will be able to contribute to the ‘Protect the Rhino Fund’,
which has been selected as the official charity of the Series.
The 50km Forever Resorts Loskop Marathon, which starts in Middelburg
and ends at the Forever Resorts Loskopdam, was rated as the second
best ultra marathon in 2010 by the athletes.
The Loskop Marathon outperformed both the Comrades and Two
Oceans Marathons. The Forever Resorts Wild Challenge, a 21,1km
country race that is run through the Loskop Nature Reserve, is
growing in popularity and was voted the best half-marathon in South
Africa in 2010. Another wonderful accolade for the race organisers.
“We are proud that both our
races scored a satisfaction rating of 92% amongst the athletes. The
organisers take serious care to limit any possible irritating issues
to ensure that athletes get only the best. Both races are growing in
popularity and we are expecting an even higher level of satisfaction
this year,” said Christo Wagenaar, group marketing manager of
Forever Resorts.
Race participation has been limited to 3500 runners for the Ultra
and 1500 for the 21,1km Wild Challenge. As a pre-entry race only,
entries closed on Friday, 1 April 2011.
A number of top athletes have selected the Forever Resorts
Loskop Marathon either as their race for the season or as a training
run in preparation for the Comrades Marathon.
“We are expecting a top
line-up of talented athletes at both events this year.
Entries were streaming in ahead of the closing date and as we
continue to process and finalise the entries for this year’s races,
we are confident that the Forever Resorts Loskop Series will be
another record breaking event in a number of ways,” concluded Hein
Koch, race director.
