New gym for Mooiplaas
MBOMBELA –
In a bid to promote sport participation and a healthy lifestyle, the
Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation will hand-over a public
gym in Mooiplaas on Saturday, February 19, starting at 10:00.
The hand-over of the gym will mark an important period for the
community of Mooiplaas as they will take ownership of a facility
which will help them in shaping the next generation of athletes in
the region and Mpumalanga. The opening of the gym will give local
athletes an opportunity to prepare for matches and tournaments in a
proper gym equipped with the necessary equipment, which was not
possible in the past and made it difficult for them to develop and
excel in sport.
The Mooiplaas Gym is also a catalyst to the department’s plans of
ensuring that people have access to sport facilities and thus make
it easy for them to take part in sport. Mooiplaas is one of two
areas which will take ownership of new gyms in the current financial
year. The other gym was built in Siyabuswa in Dr JS Moroka
Municipality and will be handed-over to the community on February
26.
Government has identified six priorities - transformation, school
sport, institutional mechanisms, mass mobilization, recreation and
funding – aimed at taking South African sport to new heights and the
handing over of the Mooiplaas Gym will go a long way in ensuring
that those objectives are met.
Also on February 19, the
department will handover sport and office equipment to clubs and the
local sport council in the Albert Luthuli Municipality respectively.
Other activities include a five-kilometre fun walk, which is aimed
at encouraging sport participation and living a healthy lifestyle.
Also, a sport festival extravaganza awaits locals on the day where
they will indulge in indigenous games, netball, volleyball,
football, chess and rugby.
