Mpumalanga to honour women on their day

Mpumalanga will commemorate the 2009 Women’s Day at Masoyi Stadium on August 9 (Sunday).

This year’s event will be celebrated under the theme; “Together Empowering Women for Development and Gender Equality”. Women’s Day evokes painful memories in South Africa’s folklore as it chronicles the heroism stand took by women in 1956 when they marched against the barbaric Pass Laws that the apartheid regime used to oppress black people in our country. Throngs of women marched to the Union Building to voice their dissatisfaction over this oppressive law.

Premier DD Mabuza will deliver a keynote address which will highlight the successes of the fairer sex in the democratic dispensation as well as the road they travelled to emancipate themselves and the country against the Apartheid regime. Fifty-three years on, women still play a leading role in making South Africa a better country and the celebration will honour them for their courage and dedication in creating and deepening democracy in our country and helping to address current challenges faced in the country.

Apart from the premier’s keynote address, government departments will also be rendering services to the people, such as applying child grants and IDs among others.

Top woman entertainer, Nothembi Mkhwebane will be on hand to thrill the patrons particularly women with her music and dance moves. Other artists include Malini, Winnie Khumalo, Thabile Myeni and DJ Madumane.

Gates open at 8h00 and entrance is free.
