Mpumalanga celebrates Human Rights Day in Ermelo
The Mpumalanga Provincial Government will celebrate Human Rights
Day at the Mpumalanga Stadium in Ermelo in the Msukaligwa
Municipality on 21 March 2010.
Human Rights Day 2010 is celebrated under the theme:
“Institutional Responses to Discrimination and Violence”.
The democratic government has declared March as Human Rights
Month in the country and during this month, the nation heightens
its awareness on issues of human rights, reflects on the
progress towards entrenching them and identifies gaps that need
to be closed.
Human Rights Day also commemorates the anniversary of the
Sharpeville Massacre that happened 50 years ago where 69 people
were killed by the apartheid security forces when they were
protesting against pass laws and other draconian legislations by
the previous regime.
As a way of cementing human rights, the democratic government
established the Human Rights Commission to promote the respect
for human rights and to monitor and assess the observance of
human rights in the country.
Various government departments will come together and serve the
people of Ermelo and surrounding areas during the celebration.
Mpumalanga Premier, DD Mabuza will lead Members of the Executive
Council and Councilors during the celebration.
The provincial government will support artists in the province
as only local artists will be performing during the day.
