Mpumalanga singing sensation, Pretty Yende is one of many South Africans who will be awarded National Orders on Freedom Day by President Jacob Zuma in Pretoria.
Yende, who is a soprano singer, will be bestowed with the Order of Ikhamanga (Silver) for excellence in music. The National Order will be an apt recognition for the singer who has achieved world acclaim with her singing prowess. Born in eMkhondo – formerly Piet Retief - on 6 March 1985, she studied music in the University of Cape Town before setting the classical music stage alight. In her 28 years, she has shared the stage with the likes of The Three Tenors. She is currently based in Italy.
Culture, Sport and Recreation MEC, Ms Sibongile Manana is happy for Yende. “I am delighted she will be finally recognized for her immense talent,” said Ms Manana, adding that Mpumalanga is brimming with pride as one of its finest daughters of the soil is representing the province well on the national and international stage.
"As the custodians of arts and culture in Mpumalanga, we hope the honouring of Pretty Yende will encourage the youth to take part in extra-mural activities such as music,” adds Ms Manana.
The National Orders are the highest awards bestowed by the President of the Republic of South Africa upon citizens and members of the international community who have contributed meaningfully in making our country what it is today.
