Rob Ferreira Hospital on a quest to strengthen clinical care
03 February 2009
The year 2009 signifies a new beginning for clinical services
at Rob Ferreira Hospital. Despite the challenges of severe shortage
of medical staff due to the absence of community service medical doctors
in 2008, Rob Ferreira Hospital managed to continue to deliver a clinical
service to our local community and the surrounding referral health facilities.
Ongoing recruiting of specialists and other medical staff during 2008 has paid off
and the hospital is now able to provide specialist care in all fields of medicine
expected at a regional facility. Over and above this, the hospital now has a dedicated
fully appointed team of management after two years of people acting on positions.
The following people have now been appointed to permanent positions;
| Dr Savera Mohangi |
: Chief Executive Officer |
| Dr Gerhard Goosen |
: Senior Medical Manager |
| Dr PR Nepgen |
: Principal Specialist and Head: Anesthetics |
| Dr K Steyn |
: Principal Specialist and Head: Orthopedics |
| Dr BS Linyama |
: Principal Specialist and Head: General Surgery |
| Dr LT Brauteseth |
: Principal Specialist and Head: Psychiatry/Mental Health |
| Dr TN Maphosa |
: Senior Specialist and Head: Pediatrics |
| Dr IS Ukpe |
: Principal Specialist and Head: Family medicine |
The strengthening of management of the hospital is in line with the
Presidential pronouncement in 2006 that all hospitals must have dedicated
teams for effective and responsive management.
As part of continuous quality assurance, Rob Ferreira Hospital participated in
the National Core Standards review for hospitals during July 2008. This review was
conducted by the National Department of Health and has helped the management to identify
processes and policies that need to be improved to ensure the delivering of a quality and
sustainable service.
The priority of the now management is to reduce waiting times and long queues in the hospital;
strengthen human resources focusing more on recruitment and retention of health professionals.
To this end, the hospital has appointed 36 interns and 12 community service medical officers
for 2009 as part of our continuous efforts to improve service delivery and clinical care.
Communities are reminded that health is a right. They should at all time if not satisfied with
level of service report such to the office of the CEO or any senior person on call.
We once more as always, remind our people to effectively and maximally utilize our clinics as
a first point of contact unless it is an emergency. Clinics are more accessible because they are
closer to where people live.
