Mpumalanga to host climate change summit

As a build up to the upcoming Climate Change talks in Durban (COP17)
towards the end of November, the Province of Mpumalanga will host a two (2) day
Provincial Summit to provide the general public with a platform to inform South
Africa’s negotiating position at the United Nations Climate Change talks.
The main objectives of the summit are:
- To increase climate change communication and public awareness
through outreach programmes;
- To build capacity among stakeholders and the broader public;
- To serve as a platform in which the Province engages its stakeholders to request inputs towards responding to the impact of climate change.
Deliberations during the summit will focus on:
1.
Climate Change Mitigation:
What policy and practical measures have been put in place to address
the adverse impact of climate change?
2.
Adaptation to the impacts of Climate Change:
What extent has the government commenced with adopting adaptation
measures to address climate change?
3.
Technology development and application:
Is there enough technology in the country to address climate change
mitigation and adaptation requirements?
The summit is expected to be attended by the Premier of Mpumalanga, Mr David Mabuza; the MEC for Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, Mr Norman Mokoena; the Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Ms Edna Molewa; MECs; Exective Mayors and Councillors, amongst others.
