Mpumalanga to recognise learners who are ambassadors of the environment

The Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, in partnership with BMW South Africa, and the Department of Education will be on Friday, 09 November 2012 recognize schools and learners who participated in the BMW SEED (School Environment Education Development) Programme annual Competition.
The schools and learners who took part in the competition are from the local municipalities of Nkomazi, Mbombela and Bushbuckridge. The programme is aimed at empowering schools and learners to become active agents of sustainability whilst improving their living standards and quality of life.
Its objectives are as follows:
- To support the school curriculum, sustainable development and poverty alleviation;
- To provide learners with skills to identify and achieve personal goals and life skills such as gathering information, planning evaluation and goals setting;
- To encourages the use of old tyres as containers to grow vegetable; and
- To encourage learners to grow permanent gardens that will supply fresh produce that supports the feeding schemes at participating schools.
