Premier Mtshweni-Tsipane to lead a Rest Stop Campaign and handing over of vehicles

10 December 2020

As part of ensuring a safe and crash free Festive Season, Mpumalanga Premier, Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane will lead a Rest Stop Campain in Emakhazeni Local Municipality.

The purpose of the campaign is to encourage motorists to rest after every two hours or 200 kilometres of driving. Fatigue is one of the contributory factors to road crashes.

The campain is one of many activities that are already taking place during this Festive Season to ensure safety on all Mpumalanga roads. These activities include, multi- disciplinary roadblocks, moving violation blitz, block patrols, pedestrian and road safety education campaigns.

The rest stop will also focus on ensuring driver and vehicle fitness and educating road users about road safety.

"We will also be checking COVID-19 compliance while making sure that you are safe on the road and you take precautionary measures in making sure people adhere to COVID-19 regulations," said the Premier.

Stakeholders from various organizations including those in law enforcement are expected to participate.

During the day, the Premier will also hand over 40 vehicles that were donated to the department by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC).

These vehicles are to assist the department to strengthen road safety and law enforcement during the Festive Season and beyond.
