Mpumalanga province to host Youth Day Commemoration in Msukaligwa Municipality

15 June 2023

Preparations to mark the annual Youth Day commemoration in Mpumalanga, are at an advanced stage. The Provincial function will take place on Friday in Ermelo, in the Msukaligwa Local Municipality, under the theme “Accelerating Youth Economic Emancipation for a Sustainable Future”.

The country commemorates June 16, to reflect and to honour the youth of 1976 Soweto Uprising, who protested against the imposition of Afrikaans by the apartheid regime, as a medium of instruction in the schools. The uprising tragically ended with hundreds of young people being brutally killed.

The democratic government encourages today’s youth to direct their activism towards creating employment, end substance abuse and gender-based violence, amongst others. This year’s Provincial commemoration comes at the time when the government intensifies measures to empower the youth, amid the high unemployment rate of about 46 percent. These measures include the Premier’s Youth Development Fund, introduced by Premier Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane three years ago, to assist youth-owned enterprises with funding. The Premier is expected to announce more available funding opportunities during the commemoration on Friday, for the youth and those living with disabilities.

Members of the media are invited to cover the event as follows:

Date: Friday, 16 June 2023
Time: 10h00
Venue: Msukaligwa Civic Centre (Open space), Ermelo
