Provincial Heritage Day celebrated in Bushbuckridge Local Municipality
24 September 2021The Provincial Heritage day function took place in Ronaldsay Trust in the Bushbuckridge Local Municipality, under strict COVID-19 regulations. The Acting Premier, Mr Vusi Shongwe delivered the key note address, focusing on mobilizing communities to take part in the vaccination programme to mitigate the spread of the virus. Mr Shongwe lamented the low twenty two (22) percent of the vaccination statistics, citing myths and propaganda circulating on social media, among the reasons.
"I urge our young and old men to get vaccinated. Vaccination will help us to return to our normal lives and help us to fully going back to work and stabilizing our economy," explained Shongwe. The heritage day is marked as a social cohesion annual day in which South Africans are encouraged to unite in their diversity, with a display of traditional attires and African music. This year’s function was celebrated under the theme: “Celebrating South Arica’s intangible cultural heritage”.
The Acting Premier seized the opportunity to further remind communities about the scourge of Gender Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF), perpetrated against women and children. He condemned those whose hands are dripping the blood of women. " A real man that loves a woman does not abuse her. A woman's dress code must not be an excuse for triggering rape. Men should appreciate women's dress code, than to view it as an invitation to rape and murder her," he said. He concluded by requesting every citizen to love and respect one another, irrespective of race, ethnicity and gender.
The commemoration was attended by MECs, Local Government represantatives, Senior Government officials and the community with cultural and musical dances by various artists and cultural groups.
