Premier and MECs address the plight of vulnerable people in Mpumalanga on Mandela day

18 July 2023

Communities in Mpumalanga caught the spirit of 'It is in your hands: Solidarity in reducing climate change and food insecurity' when government embarked on various activities across the three Districts, to commemorate the Mandela day, on Tuesday. The theme seeks to mobilise the citizens to contribute towards food security and mitigate climate change factors that lead to extreme weather conditions.

The commemoration, led by the Premier, Ms Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane, Members of the Executive and Executive Mayors, focused on the following activities, but not limited to:

  • Cultivation of backyard gardens and planting of trees;
  • Cleaning up campaigns;
  • Provision of new dignified houses for the less priviledged;
  • Donation of food and clothes;
  • Renovation of public facilities.

In Thaba Chweu Local Municipality, the Premier, accompanied by the Executive Mayor, Cllr. Friddah Nkadimeng, Kgoshikgadi Clara Mashile, several dignitaries and the community, renovated the Reakgona Youth Development center in Matibiti rural village and further cultivated a backyard food garden.

Established in 2009, the centre, which is operated by five youth volunteers, received a major boost when Premier Mtshweni-Tsipane donated ten (10) computers and five hundred (500) books for the library. She unveiled a partnership between the Provincial government and Standard Bank, in which three local SMMEs will be supported, through a financial boost of more than R200 000. The bank also donated a Jojo tank and a printer, as part of a contribution to mark the Mandela day commemoration.

Mtshweni-Tsipane says the revitalisation of the center is in line with Madiba's vision of investing in the youth, and that the center is a useful information hub of government information.
