Provincial government welcomes the 2022/23 audit outcomes

23 OCtober 2023

The Mpumalanga Provincial Government welcomes the 2022/23 audit outcomes, as announced by the Auditor-General (A-G), Ms Tsakani Maluleke during a virtual session with the Premier, Ms Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane, Members of the Executive and Accounting Officers. The auditing process is conducted by the A-G, a Chapter 9 institution, and seeks to determine the proper management of public funds by the public institutions.

Three Departments, namely Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Provincial Treasury (PT), and Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs (DARDLEA) have sustained their clean audit achievements. The Mpumalanga Economic Regulator (MER) and the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) recorded similar outcomes.

The 2022/23 audit outcomes depict a significant improvement by the Office of the Premier and the Department of Social Development. Both obtained unqualified outcomes with findings.

Five Departments, namely; Education, Culture, Sport, and Recreation (DCSR), Economic Development and Tourism (DEDT), and Public, Works, Roads and Transport (DPWR&T) and Health, maintained their previous status of unqualified outcomes. The Mpumalanga Economic Growth Agency (MEGA) is in the same category.

Premier Mtshweni-Tsipane says these outcomes are an evidence of commitment by the Departments and State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) to ensure a proper use of the appropriated budget. “We are inspired by the institutions with clean audits, as confirmed by the A-G. We have noted the contributing factors which led to the non-achievement of this aspiration by some. We are determined to intensify the implementation of audit action plans to address these factors as advised by the A-G, until this aspiration of clean audits is achieved,” the Premier emphasised.

Two Departments, namely: Community Safety, Security and Liaison (DCSSL) and Human Settlement recorded qualified outcomes. The Mpumalanga Regional Training Trust (MRTT) is in the same category.
