Premier Mtshweni-Tsipane warns communities against the sweltering heat weather

23 November 2023

Mpumalanga is among the Provinces that are experiencing a sweltering heatwave. This as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) predicts the persistent hot conditions until Friday. Since the start of the week, temperatures are rising above 30 degrees Celsius in most parts of the Province, especially in Ehlanzeni District.

Premier Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane warns communities against the exposure to the scorching sun. “We call upon all our communities to act with precaution amid the heatwave. Let us keep ourselves hydrated, by drinking water adequately. We must also protect our skin through the use of skin protection ointment,” the Premier advises.

The heat levels pick up from 09h00 until sunset. Mtshweni-Tsipane is concerned that the hot weather may lead to drowning cases as many people will opt swimming in the rivers and dams under the pretext of cooling themselves off. “This heat will entice people to swim in the rivers and dams. For those who are inexperienced, chances of drowning are high. Therefore, we urge all communities to avoid swimming as an option. Furthermore, we urge parents to keep children away from the rivers and dams, to prevent potential cases of drowning,” the Premier explains.

Mtshweni-Tsipane is adamant that during this period, all precautionary measures must be observed, to save lives.
