Premier Mtshweni-Tsipane congratulates UMP on its anniversary

31 August 2023

Mpumalanga Premier, Ms Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane congratulates the University of Mpumalanga (UMP) for reaching a ten (10) years milestone. UMP was established in 2013 and ushered in its first cohort of students in February 2014, with only three programmes. Since then the University offers 65 qualifications and boasts an enrolment of more than 8 000 students.

Mtshweni-Tsipane says the University has positioned itself as an institution of academic excellence. “On behalf of the Mpumalanga Provincial Government and the citizens, I congratulate the University for this milestone achievement. To us, the establishment of this institution brought about a sense of pride, as it represents a profound legacy of academic brilliance and a holistic skills development for Mpumalanga,” says the Premier.

She says UMP has emerged as a beacon of learning and innovation over the course of the 10 remarkable years. She attributes these to the management, led by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Thoko Mayekiso. “UMP has fostered an environment that thrives on intellectual curiosity, inclusivity and excellence. This could not be achieved without a dedicated management team and staff, led by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Mayekiso. They have worked collaboratively to nurture an environment where ideas flourish and transcend through cultural boundaries while ensuring that students’ dreams are fulfilled,” Mtshweni-Tsipane emphasised.

The Premier has pledged the support of the Provincial Government to the University and encouraged the institution to use the anniversary to envision a better future for the lives of residents in Mpumalanga.
