Mmamethlake community
happy with construction of new police
station
Media Statement
05 August 2010
Community members around Mmamethlake in
the KwaMhlanga area of Mpumalanga have
voiced excitement to Safety, Security
and Liaison (DSSL) MEC Sibongile Manana
for finally ensuring that the police
station in the area is constructed.
MEC Manana announced during her Policy
and Budget Speech this year that
Mmamethlake Police Station would be
built sometime this year.
The people voiced their joy regarding
the construction of the police station
during the hand-over ceremony of 80
reflector jackets by the DSSL to
Moretele Community Police Forum members.
The people said the receiving of the
reflector jackets from MEC Manana meant
that the station would finally be
constructed.
Speaking on behalf of the community,
Mmamethlake CPF Chairperson Skhodutla
Ratladi said the resources from
government meant that government
appreciated their efforts in assisting
the police fight crime.
He said they were happy because the
reflector jackets would make them to be
easily identified by the
would-be-criminals and will subsequently
not commit crime.
He urged the fellow CPF members not to
commit crime on grounds that people
would respect them because of the
jackets.
“This is not giving us license to commit
crime. This makes us different and be
known that we are working with the
police. We should not give the equipment
to other people, we have earned them
because we have volunteered to fight
crime,” he said.
The DSSL Nkangala Regional Head, Mr Sam
Lefifi said that government should
recruit more people in the fight against
crime. He said their role was crucial as
government had few police officers who
could not be on each and every corner
where crime was taking place.
CPF members also received torches that
they could utilise at night when
assisting the police in the fight
against crime. They were also given the
whistles to alert each other or the
police in the event there was crime in
their areas.
Tomorrow (06 August 2010), the MEC will
give 80 reflector jackets to Matsulu CPF
members, near Nelspruit.
