Media Statement

Mpumalanga Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Sibongile
Manana has condemned the attempted hijacking of a
Mpumalanga Member of the Executive Council responsible
for the Department of Human Settlement.
The incident happened at the Bapsfontein off-ramp
on 18 October 2010 at approximately 20:15
MEC Madala Masuku was travelling to a meeting when
the vehicle they were travelling in was cornered by a
silver BMW with blue lights on. The MEC’s car also had
its blue lights on, and the driver never stopped when
the three occupants of the BMW tried to stop them in
the first attempt.
The suspects then shot close to the rear window of the
MEC’s car and it came to a halt, but no one was hurt.
Two of the three suspects approached the MEC’s car armed
and stole items from the vehicle.
MEC Manana has therefore called on the police to urgently
investigate the incident and arrest the criminals before other
people fall prey to the criminals.
“These suspects pose a threat to the safety of our communities
and they should be arrested in order to keep our province secured,”
said Manana.
Manana has also called on the community to assist the police by
informing them when they spot the BMW or know the suspects and also
advise motorists to be cautious and to drive to the nearest police
station when stopped by such a car.
