Department to step up police visibility
on the road
Media Statement 13 December 2011
The Department of Community Safety,
Security and Liaison is stepping up
traffic police visibility on Mpumalanga
roads. This is after the province
witnessed a spate of accidents that
occurred since the beginning of December
2011.
The recent accident that happened at
19:20 last night on the R40 road towards
Barberton took the lives of four people.
It was a head on collision between a
Toyota Corolla sedan and Nissan bakkie
and only one person survived with
critical injuries.
According to the Mpumalanga Community
Safety, Security and Liaison MEC, Vusi
Shongwe, police visibility at night
might serve as a deterrent to motorists
who do not obey the rules of the road
and also a way of stopping those
motorists who drive at night trying to
evade traffic officers.
This will be done in a bid to save the
lives of the people through accidents’
reduction. However, this will be not a
silver bullet to road safety as there is
a need for road users to meet the
department half way by changing their
attitudes and general behaviour on the
road.
“We call upon road users to be cautious
on the road and they should remember
that the road should be shared among all
road users,” said Shongwe.
The department is adamant that if
motorists adjust their attitude to be
more biased towards road safety, many
accidents could be avoided. This will
also reduce the number of people who die
on the roads.
In another accident on the N4 in Karino
near outside Nelspruit, a woman was
killed last night at 22:30 in an
accident that occurred when the taxi
that was being towed by another collided
with the one in front, causing it the
overturn. Two people were seriously
injured while the other two were
slightly injured.
MEC Shongwe sends condolences to the
families of the deceased and urged all
motorists to ensure that they obey the
rules of the road because there is an
indication that human error plays a role
in most accidents.
