Department suspends two traffic officers

Media Statement
13 December 2011

Two Mpumalanga traffic officers have been suspended by the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison after they were found guilty of fraud by the KwaMhlanga Magistrate Court on 04 November 2011.

The two, HN Kabini and MA Thubane were convicted after the court proved elements of fraud in the issuing of a driving license in 2008. Kabini was the examiner, who claimed to have examined Thubane, upgrading her to drive a heavy motor vehicle, however, it was found that he never examined her and the upgraded driving license was withdrawn, leaving her with the original license she received on first issue.

The two officials were fined R20 000 each of which half of the amount was suspended.

The purpose of the suspension, which is with immediate effect, is to enable the department to conduct a disciplinary hearing which will determine whether the two officials are still fit to be traffic officers or not.

A letter will also be sent to the supervisors of the officials to explain why this matter was not reported to the department.

The department wants to send a message to other officials on its pay roll that steps will be taken against to any person who involves himself or herself into corrupt and criminal activities.

Meanwhile, MEC Vusi Shongwe said that the officer’s actions have serious impact on government’s effort to reduce road fatalities because it will lead to the licensing of people who are actually not competent to drive.

Therefore, the MEC commits that the department and police will work tirelessly to root out corruption at testing stations across the province.

“We are therefore calling on community members to report any suspicious activities regarding the issuing of driving licenses to their nearest police stations or through the government’s toll free anti corruption hotline – 0800 701 701 ” the MEC said.
