25 drunk drivers arrested in Mpumalanga
in one weekend
Media Statement 24 January 2012
Mpumalanga’s Traffic Intervention Unit
(TIU) has arrested 25 drivers for
driving under the influence of alcohol
following a 12 hour operation on
Saturday, 21 January 2012 in Ermelo. The
unit also arrested one person for
interfering with the operations of the
traffic officers.
MEC Shongwe, who was part of the
operation, has commended the unit for
the sterling job they did in ensuring
that they brought irresponsible drivers
to book so that more lives are saved on
the roads.
He has called on drivers to refrain from
drinking and driving as this puts many
road users’ lives in danger.
Shongwe said that the unit will continue
with these operations across the
province in a bid to make the roads even
safer.
The MEC has also called on ordinary
communities to report bad drivers and
assist the government in reducing road
accidents and fatalities.
“If we all work together, our roads will
be safer because accidents are mainly
caused by human beings. Vehicles alone
do not make these accidents. Let us all
play our role,” the MEC said.
Meanwhile, the unit has stopped over
13000 vehicles, arrested 719 drunk
drivers, 20 motorists were also arrested
for negligent and reckless driving while
other 130 drivers were arrested for
various offences between 1 October and
31 December 2011. A total of 2839
vehicles were also discontinued during
that period
