Shebeens a serious problem in Mhluzi
Date: 27 August 2007
The MEC for Safety and security Mr Fish Mahlalela
has noted with a great concern the fact that
shebeens and taverns are the significant
contributors of social contact crimes in Mhluzi
township. This was uncovered during the Imbizo held
in Mhluzi over the weekend.
The community complained that most of the serious
crimes happen in the early hours of the morning and
committed by people who are mostly from the shebeens
and tarverns. They also complained that they do not
sleep peacefully Monday to Monday these shebeens are
opened and they close in the early hours of the
morning. This was also confirmed by the patrol
during which the MEC visited some of the drinking
holds in the area, some of them do not have licences.
Some of them were opened way after midnight.
When the MEC was wrapping up the patrol, he said an
urgent meeting should be held between his Department
and the Department of Economic Development and
Planning.
The patrol is one of the many initiatives by the
Department in collaboration with other stakeholders
and community to fight against crime and to further
raise awareness on social crime Prevention.
