ESTABLISHMENT OF ONE NATIONAL HOTLINE (0800 701 701) AND SUBSEQUENT CLOSING DOWN OF THE PROVINCIAL HOTLINE (0800 004 993)

Cabinet approved the establishment of one National Anti-corruption Hotline for all national departments and provincial administrations in August 2004 and the National Anti-corruption Hotline became operational on September 2004.

The Department of the Public Service Commission, together with representatives of all departments and provinces, during a workshop held in September 2004, decided to close down all other anti-corruption hotlines within a six month period.

The Provincial Government, through the Office of the Premier, complied with the cabinet decision and closed the provincial hotline during April 2005. A message has been placed on the provincial hotline - 0800 004 993 - informing callers that there is now only one national hotline in existence and that they can direct their complaints to 0800 701 701.

The Department of the Public Service Commission is responsible for the National Anti-corruption Hotline. All complaints are registered and those pertaining to the Mpumalanga Province are forwarded to the fraud investigation unit, within the Internal Audit unit in the Office of the Premier, on a weekly basis for investigation.

The fraud investigation unit currently has three members who on a full time basis investigate all complaints regarding fraud and corruption. An additional three investigators are in the process of being appointed to beef up the investigation capacity of the unit.
