Position:

  • Premier of Mpumalanga Province since 1999.

Academic Qualifications:

  • B Juris degree with distinction in Civil Procedure, University of South Africa (UNISA) (1979)
  •  Passed a number of courses towards an LLB degree.

Career/Positions/Other Activities:

  • Public Prosecutor, Magistrate and Chief Magistrate in Lebowa and KwaNdebele (1970-1986).
  • Elected to the former homeland government.
  • Served alternatively as Minister of Departments of Justice and Education.
  • Active participant at both Convention for a Democratic South Africa(CODESA)and the Multiparty negotiations at Kempton Park during 1991and 1994.
  • Member of the National Assembly (1994-1999).
  • Member of Portfolio Committees for Justice ,constitutional review committee and Minerals and Energy (April 1994-June1999).
  • Mpumalanga Provincial Chairperson of the African National Congress (9 October 1999-March 2002).
  • Initiated the decentralisation of the finance of the Mpumalanga Provincial Government in 2001 in such a way that each of the 10 departments plus the premier's office controlled their own finance instead of a single department handling all monies of the province. This improved the financial system of the province.
  • In 2002,Mr NJ Mahlangu, as a premier of Mpumalanga Province established Traditional Authority Offices as government service centres in the whole of Mpumalanga Province. The services rendered by government were brought closer to the people. This also improved the relationship between government and traditional leaders in the province.

Award/Decorations/Bursaries:

  • Award from Inkomazi Municipality in recognition of his outstanding leadership and loyalty(2000).
  • Award from Mpumalanga Youth Commission for the economic empowerment in the province(2001).
  • African Renaissance Sage Award from Imbizo House and the Kings Foundation Trust in recognition of excellent service delivery for grass roots governance and initiatives.
  • Received a PMR Gold Award for individual in political environment who has done more to achieve a year's goal (August 2002).
  • Received a Certificate of recognition from the 3rd place on behalf of the Mpumalanga government for medium exhibition for South Africa Ubuntu Village at the United Nations World Summit on Sustainble Development.
  • American Biographical Institute Award for a Man of the Year 2002.
  • Daniel Award from Word of Grace Bible Church in recognition of his outstanding leadership (12 July 2003).
  • On 28 March 2004: M.A MAMPUDI AWARDS (For Service delivery) awarded to Mr NJ Mahlangu, honourable Premier of Mpumalanga Province, for running a clean and clear administration and being a role model in our society in Corporate Governanance. Awarded by South African Council of Churches , Govan Mbeki Municipality.
