MEC Phosa celebrates Mandela Day with the sick!
As the world continues to pray for the ailing former President, Mr Nelson
Mandela, who is in hospital for a recurring lung infection, his 95th birthday
presented yet another opportunity for people from all walks of life to honour
him by dedicating their quality time (67 minutes) to serve the indigent.
The Department responded to the clarion call by the United Nations to celebrate
the birthday of the global icon in style. Nelson Mandela International Day is an
Annual event in honour of Nelson Mandela, celebrated on the 18th July, which is
Madiba’s birthday. The day was officially declared by the United Nations in
November 2009.
MEC YN “Pinky” Phosa, HOD Dr Vusanani Dlamini, and senior managers of the
Department traded their formal outfits for orange overalls, to ensure that
nothing gets in their way to honour the 67minutes call.
The theme for the year is ‘Take action, inspire change, make everyday Mandela
Day’. The dedet took action and inspired change when they visited Embhuleni
Hospital in Chief Albert Luthuli and dedicated over 67 minutes of their time, to
contribute positively in the lives of Embhuleni Hospital patients.
Accompanied by the MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Mr Vusi
Shongwe, Mrs Phosa interacted with Embhuleni Hospital patients, wishing all the
patients a speedy recovery. The patients and staff were given fruit and words of
encouragement by MEC Phosa and the management team of dedet.
Thereafter, they proceeded to the hospital parking bays to wash a total of six
(6) hospital ambulances and pathology vans. The MEC encouraged the drivers to
keep ambulances clean at all times for hygenic purposes, and to ensure that the
Province perceived positively.
