MEC Manana calls for a thorough investigation in the case of missing Mandrax

3 July 2009

Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Sibongile Manana calls for a thorough investigation in the house breaking and theft of mandrax tablets kept as evidence in the offices of the police organised crime unit in Nelspruit.

Manana’s call came after it was discovered that drugs worth R3.7 million went missing in the offices occupied by the unit.

The drugs were confiscated at the Lebombo Border Post on 25 June, when a Mozambican man was arrested attempting to smuggle them into the country.

On 1 July the store room where the drugs were kept was found broken into and with no drugs inside.

Manana was concerned about the security in the police store rooms and how whosoever stole the drugs gained access in the building occupied by police.

“The place is supposed to be secured and should not be easily accessible to everyone, especially when such goods are kept. I am extremely disappointed at the way the theft occurred in a place of safety, which is occupied by people who are supposed to be the eye of the public,” said Manana.

She called on the management of the police to ensure that the investigation process is conducted efficiently so that whosoever responsible is arrested and prosecuted.
