Welcome to the Mpumalanga Provincial Government

Residents advised to be on alert as heavy rain is forecast for Mpumalanga

02 March 2012

The Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs in Mpumalanga would like to advise all residents of the province to be on alert of possible heavy rains that are expected in the province. Heavy rains are expected from Saturday, 03 March 2012 over the lowveld areas of Mpumalanga moving to the Highveld and the eastern parts of Mpumalanga. This rain is due to Tropical system IRINA currently situated over the Northern region of the Mozambique Channel but is projected to start moving in a south westerly direction towards the South Coast Mozambique.

The department has instructed all municipalities and Disaster Management teams to be on full alert and on standby. The heavy rains could result in an increase of dam and river levels thus making small streams very dangerous. People must move away from river banks and they must avoid crossing full rivers and over flowing bridges.

Parents are urged to warn children not to play next to streams and rivers. The department requests all communities to take precautions especially those who are staying in low-lying areas. In case of any possible flooding residents are advised to call the Disaster Management Toll free number 0800 202 507. The Department will be monitoring the situation very closely.
