Task team to investigate challenges in Thaba Chweu Local Municipality

02 April 2013

The MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Simon Skhosana has set up a technical task team to investigate all the challenges that are affecting the Thaba Chweu Local Municipality over the past few months. Some of these challenges have led to labour unrests that have resulted in staff in the municipality going on strike.

The technical task team will comprise of representatives from the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Provincial Treasury, and Ehlanzeni District Municipality. This team will engage with the staff, organised labour, councillors and all the relevant stakeholders as it seeks to deal with the challenges in the municipality. The team will look at the following issues;

  • The financial position  and obligations of the municipality
  • The agreement signed between the municipality and organised labour and its implementation
  • The relationship between the political arm and the administrative arm of the municipality
  • The relationship between organised labour and the municipality and the functionality of the relevant structures thereof
  • Allegations of intimidation, violence and disruption of services by the striking workers

The team has been given two weeks to deal with these matters and submit a preliminary report and a turnaround strategy with clear recommendations to the MEC. It has also been agreed that all municipal officials shall return to work with immediate effect.

MEC Skhosana has emphasised that the team is not there to take over the administration of the municipality but to assist. He also reiterated government’s commitment to addressing all challenges that the municipality maybe faced with. He assured the community that government will work hard to deal with the issues and will ensure that quality services are delivered to people.
