MEC Norman Mokoena monitoring the situation in Ehlanzeni District Municipality

07 July 2010

The MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Norman Mokoena is monitoring the situation in the Ehlanzeni District Municipality. MEC Mokoena has received a number of allegations of maladministration, fraud and corruption that have been levelled against the municipality. In an effort to assess the veracity of these allegations, MEC Mokoena has written to the municipality requesting it to respond to the allegations that have been levelled against it. This is as per requirement of section 106(1)(a) of the Local Government Municipal Systems Act, 2000 (act No.32 of 2000).Once the MEC has received the municipality’s response he will consider it and then decide on the course of action.

MEC Mokoena would like to reiterate that creating an effective, efficient and responsive local government is one of government’s priorities and therefore government will continue to work hard to deal with the problems faced by local government. He would also like to state it categorically clear that the department will continue to act without fear nor favour where allegations of any wrong doing are brought to his attention. “It is wrong for people create aspersions that the department is not acting on matters of wrong doing in some municipalities. Where matters of wrong doing have been brought to our attention we have acted and we will continue to do so but our actions must be guided by the law.” said Mokoena.

He further added that this administration is committed to addressing all the problems that are faced by communities.

“We remain resolute to making sure that we work with the communities to deal with all issues affecting them in a transparent manner.” said Mokoena.
