Welcome to the Mpumalanga Provincial Government

Department sends disaster management team to assess areas affected by storms

11 November 2009

The MEC for the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr. Norman Mokoena, has noted with sadness the plight of the communities in Mattafin under Mbombela Local Municipality and in Langeloop and Kwa Mhlushwa under Nkomazi Local Municipality, whose homes were damaged after a storm hit these areas last night.

MEC Mokoena has dispatched the disaster management team to the affected areas to conduct an assessment to determine the extent of the damage and if there is any disaster relief aid that must be dispatched to the area. As an immediate relief the department has provided blankets and tents to the affected families in the Nkomazi municipality.

The Department has also advised all municipalities to be on full alert and on standby for any possible storms as more rains are expected in the province.

“We welcome the rains, during this time of year and due to the water scarcity we are faced with but l also urge communities to be on alert during this rainy season for any possible floods or storms, and they must report these to the department’s disaster toll free number 0800202507.” said Mokoena

MEC Norman Mokoena will visit Mattafin, the affected area in Mbombela later today.
