Welcome to the Mpumalanga Provincial Government

Residents warned to be alert as heavy rain fall is expected in Mpumalanga

11 December 2012

The Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs in Mpumalanga would like to warn all residents of the province to be on alert of heavy rains expected over the next few days.

The department has instructed all municipalities to be on full alert and on standby. The heavy rains could result in an increase of dam and river levels thus making small streams and rivers very dangerous. People are advised to move away from river banks and they must avoid crossing full rivers and over flowing bridges.

As children are home for school holidays parents are urged to warn them not to play next to streams and rivers. The department requests all communities to take precautions especially those who are staying in low-lying areas. All road users are urged to be extremely cautious on the roads as they are wet and rocks might have fallen in some areas. In case of any possible flooding residents are advised to call the Disaster Management Toll free number 0800 202 507.

The MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Madala Masuku will today visit Bloemfontein farm at Lothair outside Ermelo, the scene of the accident where a bridge collapsed due to heavy rains and people lost lives.
