Welcome to the Mpumalanga Provincial Government

Residents warned to be on high alert of heavy rain fall in Mpumalanga

18 April 2013

The Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs in Mpumalanga would like to warn all residents of the province to be on alert of heavy rains that are predicted to begin on Friday, 19 April until Saturday, 20 April 2013. These heavy rains are expected over the South and Western Mpumalanga Highveld.

The department has instructed all municipalities to be on full alert and on standby. The heavy rains could result in an increase of dam and river levels thus making small streams and rivers very dangerous. People are advised to move away from river banks and they must avoid crossing full rivers and over flowing bridges.

The department requests all communities to take precautions especially those who are staying in low-lying areas. All road users are urged to be extremely cautious on the roads as they will be wet and rocks might have fallen in some areas.

As we approach the winter season we also appeal to all people to be extremely cautious with the heating appliances and fires that they may use to keep themselves warm. Please make sure that all fires and appliances are put off before going to sleep and that children are not left unattended with these.

In case of any possible flooding residents are advised to call the Disaster Management Toll free number 0800 202 507.
