As part of implementing the section 106 investigation report, the Emalahleni Local Municipality has suspended five senior managers. These suspensions follow that of the Municipal Manager, in March 2010.

In the same vein MEC Mokoena has condemned in the strongest possible terms that apparent acts of sabotage that have led to the destruction of the Main River substation, which is the  main incoming substation to  Kwaguqa, Lynville, Thushanang and Kwa Thomas Mahlanguville in Emalahleni.

MEC Mokoena would like to assure the communities of Emalahleni Local Municipality that government will not be deterred in its efforts to ensure that all individuals implicated in any acts of wrong doing in the municipality are brought to book. “This appears to be an act of sabotage conducted in an organised manner. Acts of sabotage are a criminal activity against the state and those implicated in such acts will be dealt with harshly. I call upon the law enforcement agents to investigate and apprehend all those individuals who will be found to be implicated in this criminal act of destroying the power station. Once again I want to reiterate our government’s commitment to ensuring that corruption is eradicated in all its forms and that people receive quality services” said Mokoena.

All the suspended managers will face disciplinary action soon.

The report follows an investigation that was conducted in the municipality in terms of section 106(1) (b) of the Local Government Municipal Systems Act, 2000 (act No.32 of 2000), after MEC Mokoena received allegations that the municipality was failing to meet its constitutional obligations. The investigation centred on allegations of maladministration, fraud, nepotism, corruption, and poor service delivery.
