Residents warned to be on alert as heavy rain is forecast for Mpumalanga
18 October 2011
The Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional
Affairs in Mpumalanga would like to warn all residents of the province to be on
alert as heavy rains are expected in the province tomorrow. The Weather Service
predicts 80% chances of rain with thunderstorms expected on the Highveld and
escarpment on Wednesday, 19 October 2011.
The department has instructed all municipalities to be on
full alert and on standby. The heavy rains could result in an increase of dam
and river levels thus making small streams very dangerous. People must move away
from river banks and they must avoid crossing full rivers and over flowing
bridges. Parents are urged to warn children not to play next to streams and
rivers. The department requests all communities to take precautions especially
those who are staying in low-lying areas.
