Department of Co-Operative Governance and Traditional Affairs increases awareness on women and child abuse

27 November 2009

The MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Norman Mokoena, has reiterated the Department’s commitment to fighting violence against women and children. MEC Mokoena has emphasised that women and children are amongst the most vulnerable groups in our society and they need to be protected.

“As a Department we are putting special emphasis on our programmes to ensure that we create an environment that promotes the role of women and children. We urge everyone especially men to make sure that we protect our women” said Mokoena.

As part of the 16 days campaign the department will be holding an awareness campaign for all its staff members on 27 November 2009. At this awareness campaign staff members will be taught on the incidences of violence perpetuated against women and children, challenge these perpetrators to change their behaviour and how such incidences can be prevented.

The Department wishes to embrace and give a message of encouragement to women and children who have been and are still victims of violence and abuse by those who are meant to protect them. We declare and pledge our relentless support during the 16 days of activism and beyond.

The 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children is a United Nations campaign that takes place annually from the 25th November to 10 December. Since 1999 the South African Government has run a parallel campaign that includes issues relating to violence against women and children. This campaign focuses primarily on generating an increased awareness of the negative impact of violence on women and children as well as society.
