Institution of an investigation on the burning of Lesedi

The Mpumalanga Department of Education has instituted an
investigation on what led to the burning of Lesedi Primary School in
Bushbuckridge Region on Wednesday, 18 August 2009.
A three classroom block with 44 learner tables, 106
chairs, steel cupboards and four shelves were burned down. Chalk boards and
notice boards were destroyed.
A meeting was held this morning between the School
Principal, the Regional Management Team, the School Governing Body members and
teachers to assess the damage and conditions for learning and teaching.
It became clear that it will not be possible to teach
learners today and they were all advised to go home and come back on Monday, 24
August 2009.
In the meantime, a parents meeting has been called to
formally inform parents of this development.
The department has opened a case of arson with the police.
The damage is estimated at R400 000.
