Hard work of excellence awarded in style

The hard work and efforts put into giving the people of Mpumalanga sustainable settlements really paid off. The Provincial Department of Human Settlements hosted their annual Govan Mbeki Human Settlements Awards on the 8th of May 2012 and to which the best was awarded accordingly. The event was well attended by special guest such as the MEC of Cooperate Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Madala Masuku as well as mayors from various district and local municipalities.

Department’s MEC Siphosezwe Masango called on all the stakeholders to assist government in delivering quality and sustainable human settlements for the communities. The awards are recognising and honouring the efforts by stakeholders within the construction and development sectors. The awards honour all partners within the built industry in partnering with government to deliver proper human settlements as defined by the broadened mandate of the department.”

The awards truly honoured the role players in the human settlements value chain which included developers, building contractors, banking sector, community based organisations, mining sector, building material suppliers, professional associations that have committed to partner with government in building sustainable human settlements and making the millennium development goals achievable by 2014. The awards which were presented by MECs Masango and Masuku, which are in line with the Department’s broadened mandate were as follows: 

  • Best People’s Housing Process Project: Sibambisele Maintenance
  • Best Informal Settlements Project of the Year: High Echelon Trading
  • Best Rental Stock Project of the Year: Emthonjeni Rental Stock
  • Best Priority Project of the Year: Klarinet Integrated Human

The winners of these categories were awarded not only with a certificate of excellence and trophy but they also got a laptop and printer. 

There were also other awards given to stakeholders, the MEC’s Merit awards, which are as follows:

  • Accredited Municipality: Emalahleni Local Municipality
  • Best Contractor in the Non-Subsidy Market: Hectorspruit Estate
  • Best Student: Mr Lerato Motloung
  • Best Woman Contractor: Mpfumelelo Business Enterprise
  • Best Youth Contactor: Manodoma Enterprise

 MEC congratulated all the stakeholders who aim at making a difference in the lives of many and provide people with sustainable human settlements with all the necessary facilities. “This event must go beyond just receiving accolades, rather by show-casing and demonstrating excellence by all participants. With that in mind, the delivery of quality and much needed service to our communities will not be a distant dream – but a reality”, he concluded.  The awards will not only encourage stakeholders to improve, but also assist them to deliver quality houses and other services. All Provincial winners will compete with their peers from other Provinces at the National Awards on the 31st May 2012 in Gallagher Estate, Gauteng.
