Invitation to a policy budget speech presentation
10 May 2010
The Department of Human Settlements will be presenting its Policy
Budget Speech for the year 2010/11 at the Provincial Legislature on Tuesday
afternoon.
Some of the issues to be presented by the MEC for the Department of
Human Settlements will include achievements the department has realised during
the last financial year in various programmes. What challenges the department
faced and how they were resolved. Technical challenges in so far as building
quality houses and the shortage of building inspectors in the province.
The backlog in housing has been one of the biggest challenges in
housing provision. Currently more that 260 000 families need housing and the
number is growing each year. The number is constantly growing as more farm
workers are being evicted from farms where they had stayed their whole lives.
The MEC will also present how projects in province have progressed in terms of
meeting their deadlines. The department met with the contractors throughout the
province, in attempting to identifying challenges and he will try to resolve the
slow delivery process.
There is also the issue of governance where the MEC is expected to say
what strategy the department will employ to deal with corruption, prompt payment
to service providers and challenges of abandonment of projects in the province.
The new mandate for the department includes providing housing, public amenities
and assisting with employment opportunities in their area. This will also
encourage collective delivery where sister departments work together to improve
service delivery. The MEC will also explain how integrated service will help
improve services.
