Welcome to the Mpumalanga Provincial Government

Department of Human Settlements delivers on Freedom Day

23 April 2012

The Mpumalanga Department of Human Settlements will join hands with other government departments to deliver services during the Freedom Day celebration by launching a Community Residential Units Project (CRU) at eMthonjeni Township (Machadodorp), Emakhazeni Local Municipality on the 27th April 2012. The CRU has been completed with 150 units with each unit equipped with two bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom and a living area – the floor is furnished with ceramic tiles. There is also a community hall which is schedule to be completed by the end of the month.

The CRU project is 97 percent occupied and the operation of the facility has been given to the Steve Tshwete Housing Association. It was agreed that the Housing Association will operate the facility for a period of three years then be handed over to the Emakhazeni Local Municipality. The association has also indicated that a grand opening event will be held when the construction is completed. The delivery of these improved family units through the project is in response to the Department’s commitment to upgrade existing buildings and acquire new ones as part of inner-city rejuvenation.

In his Policy and Budget vote last year, MEC Siphosezwe Masango said “the Department will deal with issues of urban decay and fully realise the ideal of city rejuvenation. Social cohesion and integration can only be realised when communities are provided with adequate social amenities”.

MEC Masango also committed the Department that it intended buying two properties for rental stock development. The launch is seen as a major delivery for the department in its quest to deliver sustainable integrated human settlements.

On the 27 April, the whole country will be celebrating 18 years of freedom and democracy. Freedom Day commemorates the first non- racial democratic society that was achieved in 1994. The celebration marks the liberation of our country and its people from a long period of colonialism and minority domination. Freedom Day also celebrates the relentless efforts of those who fought for liberation. The CRU launch will precede the main event at eMthonjeni Township, Emakhazeni Local Municipality.
