Recognition given to all stakeholders during the Govan Mbeki Awards

30 April 2013

It’s all systems go for this year’s Govan Mbeki Awards aimed at honouring all stakeholders who have made significant contribution in the delivery of integrated human settlements. The department is putting final touches on the state of readiness for the awards ceremony taking place on the 02nd May 2013 at the Ehlanzeni Disaster Management Centre in Nelspruit. MEC Andries Gamede will host partners within the construction industry, including Executive Mayors, Private Sector, Business sector and contractors.

The awards are aimed at recognising/honouring key role players who have contributed substantially to government’s endeavours of housing the needy within integrated and sustainable communities. These include amongst others, contractors, developers, media houses, and business partners. The awards present an opportunity for recognising efforts by showcasing excellent accomplishments and milestones within the human settlements value chain. The awards were initiated by the forum of Minister and all Provincial MECs (MINMEC) in 2006.

The province will award 20 participants from 10 of the 14 categories, which include amongst others, Best Priority, Rural, Women Contractor, Youth Contractor and Informal Settlements Upgrading Projects that excelled during the 2012/13 financial year. All the Provincial winners will compete with their counterparts from other provinces at the national awards ceremony scheduled for June 2013 in Gauteng. In last year’s campaign, the province triumphed in the Best Informal Settlements Upgrading Category, came second in the Best Peoples Housing Programme (PHP) and Best Priority Projects.
