Welcome to the Mpumalanga Provincial Government

Executive Council Meeting

7 October 2010

The Executive Council held an extraordinary meeting at Nelspruit in the Mbombela Local Municipality on Wednesday, 6 October 2010.

The Executive Council is dedicating considerable time in exercising monitoring expenditure by government departments. The Executive Council as part of this monitoring of expenditure concentrated on the evaluation of the compensation of all employees in all the departments. The Executive Council was able to make strategic decisions on which posts were critical for service delivery and which were not. The Executive Council decided that only critical posts must be filled by departments and in the education department, educators and principals were prioritised.

Further exercises in this regard will be conducted in subsequent quarters as the Executive Council continues to monitor government spending on a regular basis.

A presentation was made to Exco by the National Department of Education on the preparedness of learners to write their final matric exams. There are 518 schools in the province and 55 885 learners registered for this year’s matric exams. There are also 5 149 markers that have been registered in the province. On the whole the Department of Education is satisfied with preparations for examinations with only 19 days to go. It was indicated that a credible examination unit has been established by both provincial and national government to develop provincial capacity and establish systems, processes and procedures. The Exco is satisfied with the system put in place by the team made up of both provincial and national departments and is of the opinion that the province has indeed been put in better position than before. Further work is still to be done.

In this presentation they are indicating that enrollment of one million learners in Mpumalanga have stabilised in the last three years, with an average annual enrollment of 56 000 grade 12 learners. This is commendable in that it is an indication that few learners get lost in the system from point of entry to matriculation level.

The exams will commence on 25 October 2010 and the last exams are to be written on 3 December 2010 and the results will be announced on 6 January 2011.
