Welcome to the Mpumalanga Provincial Government

Premier Mabuza praises new AU Chairperson as “Asset”

13 September 2012

Mpumalanga Premier David Mabuza has applauded the Home Affairs Minister Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma on her new responsibility as Chairperson of the African Union saying South Africa has given Africa an asset, not a reject.

The Premier was speaking at a Gala Dinner to launch a provincial stakeholder forum by the Department of Home Affairs to ensure implementation of the national population registration campaign.

Mabuza said the people of South Africa including the ruling party valued Minister Dlamini-Zuma, and were excited to release her to Africa.

“We hope that the Minister’s move to the African Union gives us as South Africans an opportunity to put our hand in the driving seat in addressing the problems affecting us and the rest of the people in our continent.

“We are confident that we are giving Africa an asset, not a reject. We need to give her all the support she deserves since her success will be our success. We must all agree that we are giving Africa the best cadre which is equal to task,” said the Premier.

Speaking about the national population registration campaign, Premier Mabuza said the drive came at a right time when Mpumalanga was being challenged by undocumented people from Mozambique and Swaziland who illegally settled in the province.

He said the forum would be a bridge between government and the citizens. According to the Premier, the forum would also assist government to listen and respond to the issues raised by the people.

“This initiative by the Department of Home Affairs is a step in the right direction. It will indeed assist government to plan properly as we have been challenged by undocumented people from our neighbours.

“Each time we plan as government, we always miss the target because of the undocumented people. We must thank the department for showing good leadership in this regard,” said Mabuza.

The campaign promotes amongst others the registration of new born babies within 30-days, registration of marriages and death.
