Welcome to the Mpumalanga Provincial Government

Mpumalanga Cabinet Media Statement

15 December 2009

The Mpumalanga Executive Council approved the Mpumalanga Government Anti-Corruption Strategy at its meeting held on 15 December 2009.

The Anti-Corruption Strategy seeks to introduce a holistic and integrated approach to fighting corruption, balancing prevention, investigation, prosecution and also public participation in fighting corruption.

The establishment of the Mpumalanga Anti-Corruption Strategy is in line with Premier David Mabuza’s commitment in his State of the Province Address in June.   Premier Mabuza said, “The scourge of crime and corruption undermines the core values of human development and the enjoyment of human rights enshrined in the Constitution. We need to fight fraud and corruption in both the private and public sectors.”

The Provincial government will convene an Anti-Corruption Summit next year. A Provincial Anti-Corruption Forum will be established, with stakeholders meeting at least twice a year to formulate joint policies and advice to the provincial government on curbing corruption and establishing effective control systems of government.

The Public Know your Service Rights and Responsibility Campaig

The Executive Council welcomed the presentation by the Department of Public Service and Administration about the citizen’s Know your Service Rights and Responsibilities Campaign.

The concept is emanating from the 2003 survey which pointed at a general concern about the extent to which citizens are aware of their rights regarding the service delivery matters.

The campaign will also re-emphasise the implementation and the importance of Batho Pele principles, and is expected to discourage complacency among public servants as citizens would be aware of their rights, thereby forging a good partnership between government and citizens.

The provincial government will investigate the possibilities of establishing a Batho Pele Inspectorate to monitor and investigate service delivery complaints.

The Day of Reconciliation 16 December 2009

The Executive Council approved the theme of the 2009 Reconciliation Day Celebration which will be hosted in the Gert Sibande District, Albert Luthuli Local Municipality at the Diepdale Sports Fields on 16 December 2009.

The 2009 theme is called “Celebrating Unity in Diversity: Paying Tribute to Veterans”.

Mpumalanga Premier David Mabuza will on the day visit various households in the area and also deliver a keynote address.

The community of Diepdale will also have an opportunity to have their eyes checked, wheelchairs will be donated to the needy, food parcels will be distributed, Identity Documents will be issued by the Department of Home Affairs and there will be registration for social grants.

The commemoration of 16 December affords the nation an opportunity to reflect on its 15 years of democracy, debate and deal with the present and the future challenges.
