Welcome to the Mpumalanga Provincial Government

Mpumalanga Premier’s update on the Scholar Transport Commission during a Media Briefing, Government Complex

19 November 2010

In July 2009 I gave notice that I had appointed, by means of a Premier’s Notice published in the Provincial Gazette Extraordinary No 1698, and in terms of legal prescripts, a Commission of Inquiry, which was instructed to investigate and report to me on the Scholar Transport irregularities in the Province.

The commission was initially instructed to investigate and report to myself on or before 30 September 2009.

Subsequently, the terms of reference of the Commission of Inquiry were amended by extending the scope of the investigation to include Scholar Transport in Mpumalanga since 1996. As a result, the tenure of the commission was extended to 29 October 2010.

Just over a year from its commencement the findings of the Commission presented to me yesterday by the Head of the Commission, Ms Hettie Groenevald.

I will thoroughly study the contents of the report and its recommendations to inform my cause of action going forward. Based on my assessment of the report which I hope to complete in the next two weeks, I will duly pronounce the appropriate steps to be taken.

I wish to assure you of my commitment to a clean, accountable, transparent, and responsive government that is intolerant of corruption and put the interests of its citizens first.
