The Mpumalanga Provincial Cabinet Statement

The Mpumalanga Executive Council met today (24 February 2010) at the Riverside Government Complex to look at how the provincial government will better implement and monitor the commitments made during the State of the Province Address last week.

Premier David Mabuza announced that the provincial government is committed towards the ensuring that the challenges relating to creation of decent work, education, health, fighting crime and corruption do not escape the government’s radar screen.

Premier Mabuza further said, “We are calling for less schamtho (speaking) but more Action, Action and Action.”

The Executive Council endorsed the State of the Province Address and committed to achieve all the commitments made during the State of the Province Address. Premier Mabuza is also expected to sign deliverable agreements with all the Members of the Executive Council.

The Executive Council also further joined President Jacob Zuma, Premier David Mabuza, the people of Mpumalanga and the people of South Africa in celebrating 20 years after the release of former President Nelson Mandela from prison. 

The Local Government Summit

The Provincial Government will hold a two day Local Government Summit to discuss the Provincial Local Government Turnaround Strategy document. The Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs has organised a summit to be held on 25th and 26th February 2010 in the Gert Sibande District Municipality.

This local government summit was announced by Premier David Mabuza during the State of the Province Address last week (19 February 2010).

Premier Mabuza said, “In the long term, the Province will develop a comprehensive turnaround strategy for local government that will place local government into a sustainable developmental path. We will convene a Local Government Summit before the end of this month (February) to craft practical programmes that will assist municipalities to be more people centred and service delivery-driven.”

The outcomes of the Summit are expected to map out clear the system of intergovernmental relations and the related intergovernmental fiscal transfers and the dependence.

The appointment
 The Executive Council approved the following appointments:
  1. Mr. HB Magagula as Chief Director: Traditional Institutions in the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs.
  2. Mrs. HG Shube as Chief Director: Corporate Services in the Department of Co-operative and Traditional Affairs.
