Mpumalanga Awards ABET and Learnership certificates
24 May 2010
The Member of the Executive Council, Ms Reginah Mhaule will deliver a
keynote address during the Adult Basic Education and Training( ABET) and
Learnership certification ceremony that will take place on Wednesday, 26 May
2010 at the AG Swanepoel stadium in Ermelo .
The main purpose of the ceremony is to award certificates to public
servants (general workers) and unemployed youth who have succesfully
participated in ABET and Learnership programmes respectively . It is a sign of
encouragement and recognition of their achievements despite the many
obstacles that may have slowed or prevented their early educational development
as well as offering experiential training to the unemployed youth.
The ABET and learnership programmes are provided to general workers to give them access to basic education and skills so that they can be able to be productive citizens by grapping the employment opportunities that require their skills. This is part of government ‘s objective to increase the skills base and reduce the illiteracy rate of the province by ensuring that all people become active participants in the mainstream of economic activities.
The ABET programme was initiated in 2001 and since then more that 5900
general workers were successful in these programmes. Learnerships were started
in the year 2004/2005 and about 700 learners were successful.
This year alone we will see 549 level 4 ABET learners and 187
Public Administration and Human Resource learners receiving certificates in
different levels.
The MEC is also expected to acknowledge 919 ABET level 1-3 learners during the ceremony.
