28 September 2009
The Mpumalanga Executive Council met last week at the
Riverside Government Complex to look at the provinces state of readiness for the
up-coming 2009 Grade 12 examination scheduled to take place next month, October
2009. The Department of Education revealed that it is more than ready to
handle the grade 12 examination in the province. More than 55 000 full time
candidates and more than 2 000 part-time candidates have registered to write in
the forth coming National Senior Certificate examination in the province. The
Executive Council would also like to emphasise that the province will always be
committed into an accident free Grade 12 examinations.
The Executive Council also noted and supported the progress made by the Department of Education on the initiatives to establish the Institute for Higher Learning, University, in the province. Premier David Mabuza announced in June that the provincial government would continue to pursue the establishment of the university. Premier Mabuza said the establishment of the university will contribute significantly in the economic growth and skills development of the province.
The merger of the parastatals
The Executive Council expressed satisfaction about the
progress in the merger of the three provincial government parastatals. Premier
David Mabuza announced during the state of the province address in June 2009
that Mpumalanga Economic Growth Agency (MEGA), Mpumalanga Agricultural
Development Corporation (MADC) and Mpumalanga Housing Finance Company (MHFCO)
will merge to form one public entity.
Premier Mabuza said the reasons for the merger of these
three parastatals would be among other things to establish the institutional
capacity for driving an accelerated programme of the economic growth and job
creation through enhanced enterprise development and building massive economic
and social infrastructure in the province.
The Mpumalanga Economic Development Agency Bill was
published for public comments on 4 August 2009, and there were no objections
received. The bill will be send to the provincial legislature for approval
into law. The labour has been happy with the way in which the merger
process of these parastatals has been handled.
The Executive Council also applauded the initiatives of
the Department of Co-operative Government and Traditional Affairs to assist
municipalities in the province to deal with the service delivery challenges.
The Executive Council have retaliated its call that communities shall not engage
in act of violence when protesting in the name of poor service delivery.
