MEC Manana welcomes the arrests of five cops suspected of corruption

1 November 2010

Mpumalanga Safety, Security and Liaison, MEC Sibongile Manana has welcomed the arrests of five police officers who have appeared in various courts last week for offences ranging from corruption to defeating the ends of justice.

According to the MEC, the arrests signal government’s intention to deal decisively with corruption, which together with crime has been identified as one of the five priorities of the current administration.

“The arrests of these officers will go a long way in ensuring that criminal elements are taken out of the system,” she said.

The incidents of corruption mirror the police in a bad light and it also undermines the good work that other committed police men and women are doing in the fight against crime. She said such incidents had a potential of setting the country back because police were the custodians of law and order.

“We are currently making in-roads in our communities as more and more of our people are coming forward to assist us in the fight against crime, the decline of crime over the 2009/10 financial year is attributable to community participation,” explained Manana.

She has appealed to the Criminal Justice System to urgently finalise the cases of these officers so that those who are guilty are immediately taken out of the system.

She has however appealed to the community to assist government by reporting any suspicious activities within government including SAPS.

“Corruption can only be defeated if communities assist government by reporting crime and not hiding the perpetrators,” she said.
