MEC Manana to launch Anti-Corruption Strategy

02 June 2010

In an effort to minimise crime at the areas bordering Mozambique and Swaziland which are regarded as safe heavens for criminals, Mpumalanga Department of Safety, Security and Liaison will launch Anti-Corruption and Human Trafficking Strategies.

The Strategies are also expected to eliminate criminal activities at the border posts by government officials.

During her Policy and Budget Speech for 2010/11 last month, MEC Sibongile Manana said the initiative would ensure effective delivery and improved integrity of officials at the ports of entry through coordinated law enforcement.

“We want to ensure that our members [officials] are not caught with their pants down. Our mandate is to fight crime and as we do that, we do not expect law enforcers to be found wanting,” she said.

She said, as part of implementing the strategies at the ports of entries, officials deployed would be thoroughly vetted and screened.

Last year, the MEC requested the return of SANDF back to the borders following her visit to the 500km-long international borderline between South Africa and Mozambique and Swaziland, the National Cabinet later re-deployed the army.

The media is invited to attend the launch which will take place as follows

Date: Tuesday, 08 June 2010
Venue: Municipal Hall, Komatipoort
Time: 09h00

The MEC will later on the day chair the Justice Crime Prevention and Security Cluster (JCPS) meeting to get a final briefing on the state of readiness in ensuring a safe and secure 2010 World Cup in Mpumalanga.

JCPS comprises of SAPS, Correctional Services, Safety, Security and Liaison, Justice and Constitutional Development, Home Affairs and State Security departments.
