Eleven dead in Emalahleni accident

7 September 2011

Eleven people have died this afternoon in a collision involving a truck and a midi-bus between Ogies and Bethal on R545 Road.

13 people sustained serious injuries and 11 of them were rushed to Cosmos Hospital in Emalahleni while the other two were taken to a nearby mine hospital.

Mpumalanga Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe has sent condolences to the bereaved families and wished those who were injured a speedy recovery.

MEC Shongwe has called on the intensification of roadblocks that would mainly focus on public transport and freight because accidents involving such transport modes result in too many fatalities.

He has also urged motorists to exercise caution and tolerance on the roads. He added that owners and drivers of public transport and freight should ensure the roadworthiness of their vehicles and driver fitness and not put profit above human lives.
